Minnesota Permit Testing Information

The Knowledge Test (or permit test) is administered by the Minn. Dept. of Public Safety at designated Minnesota Exam Centers. You will be responsible to bring your son or daughter to one of the exam centers to take the test. We provide information in the Parent Letter and on the last day of class which includes all of the testing requirements and exam center locations. No appointment is necessary.

To be eligible to take the Knowledge Test, students must:
  • Be at least 15 years old
  • Completed 30 hours of classroom and have received their Blue Card from Safeway
  • Bring a primary and secondary form of identification
    • Primary Forms: certified birth certificate or valid passport
    • Secondary Forms:  school issued ID card or original Social Security card
  • Present their Minnesota ID card (if they have one)
  • Know their Social Security number (must be provided on application)
  • Pass a Vision Test
  • Have their photo taken
  • Pay the fee of $12.00 (credit cards not accepted)
  • Have a parent or guardian available to sign the application

Students will be given a yellow receipt that is a valid Instruction Permit until their photo permit comes in the mail. The receipt is valid for 45 days. If the permit is not received within 45 days, it is your responsibility to call the Minn. Dept. of Public Safety at the phone number on the yellow receipt. Be aware that the student may not have driving privileges.

The Instruction Permit allows the student to practice driving with a licensed driver who is age 21 or older. The student is required to hold the permit for a minimum of six months before attempting their Road Test. The permit is valid for two years and is renewable.

The student must have the Instruction Permit with them at all times while driving.
